In an increasingly digital world, algorithms influence many aspects of our lives, from determining the advertisements we see online to making critical decisions about hiring, lending, and even criminal justice. Yet, discussions about algorithmic bias are often met with headlines declaring, “Algorithms are racist,” or “Algorithms are sexist.” While these statements highlight legitimate concerns, they miss an essential point: algorithms themselves don’t discriminate—people do.

The Nature of Algorithms

An algorithm is essentially a set of rules or instructions that a computer follows to solve a problem. It has no inherent motive, opinion, or bias. Algorithms operate solely based on the data they’re trained on and the objectives set by their designers. However, the neutrality of an algorithm doesn’t guarantee fairness in its outcomes.

Bias in Data: The Root of the Problem

The primary source of algorithmic bias lies in the data. If an algorithm is trained on historical data that reflects systemic inequalities—such as wage gaps, housing discrimination, or biased hiring practices—it will inevitably reproduce these patterns. For instance, if a hiring algorithm is trained on resumes from a company with a history of favoring male candidates, it might learn to prioritize male applicants simply because the data reflects past decisions.

This isn’t the algorithm’s fault. It’s a reflection of the biases present in the society that generated the data.

The Role of Designers

Algorithm designers play a pivotal role in shaping how these systems operate. Every step of algorithm development—choosing the data, defining the objective, setting evaluation metrics, and implementing safeguards—carries the potential for human bias. When these biases go unchecked, they become encoded into the system, amplifying the problem.

For example, a predictive policing algorithm might disproportionately target minority neighborhoods if the designers fail to account for the historical over-policing of these areas. The algorithm isn’t discriminatory—it’s faithfully reflecting the discriminatory patterns embedded in the training data.

Why Blaming Algorithms Is Misguided

Blaming algorithms for discriminatory outcomes is like blaming a mirror for reflecting a distorted image. The mirror doesn’t create the distortion; it merely reveals it. Similarly, algorithms don’t create biases—they expose and perpetuate the biases already present in the data and decisions of their creators.

This perspective shifts the focus from the algorithm itself to the people and processes behind it. It’s not enough to build “fair” algorithms; we must also examine the systems that produce biased data and the decisions made during algorithm design.

How to Build Fairer Algorithms

Creating fair algorithms requires intentional effort at every stage of development. Here are some steps to ensure algorithms produce equitable outcomes:

  1. Diverse Data Curation: Actively seek and include diverse datasets to minimize the risk of perpetuating existing biases.
  2. Bias Audits: Regularly test algorithms for disparate impacts across different demographic groups.
  3. Transparency: Document and disclose how algorithms are designed, what data they use, and the assumptions they make.
  4. Human Oversight: Combine algorithmic decision-making with human judgment to catch and correct potential biases.
  5. Ethical Guidelines: Establish standards for algorithmic fairness and hold developers accountable for meeting them.

The Responsibility Lies with Us

Algorithms are tools—powerful ones, but tools nonetheless. They don’t possess intent or prejudice. The responsibility for fairness lies with the people designing, training, and deploying them. By addressing biases in the data and being mindful of ethical considerations, we can harness algorithms to create a fairer, more inclusive world.

In the end, the question isn’t whether algorithms discriminate. The question is: Are we willing to confront and correct the human biases they reveal?
